National Home Security Month 2016 is Almost Here

A month of tips and advice about home security

Annually, October is National Home Security Month – a campaign that runs throughout the month to highlight home security and share tips and advice for protecting your home and belongings. You can see more information here.

The purpose of the campaign is to get people talking about home security and make them aware of the risks. It’s timed in October to coincide with autumn and evenings getting darker. It’s being backed by companies and organisations in the security industry of all sizes from multi-nationals like Yale to smaller, regional companies such as us!

The themes of the campaign

Each week will feature a different theme as follows:

  • Week 1, w/c 3rd October: NHSM is Back
The campaign kicks off with general hints and tips to keep your home secure
  • Week 2, w/c 10th October: Safe as Houses
Looking at total home security and how to protect the weak points that burglars target
  • Week 3, w/c 17th October: Smart Home Security
With the rise of the automated home and all things smart, this week will be exploring the advances in smart home security, looking at the latest security gadgets available to protect your home.
  • Week 4, w/c 24th October: Dark Nights
This is the week that the clocks go back and darker nights always bring a spike in break ins. This week will provide tips on getting your home secure for winter
  • Week 5, w/c 31st October: Spooky Season
The scariest thing about Halloween (and Bonfire Night) is the increase in burglaries. The campaign finishes off with tips on making sure you don’t become one of the statistics

What we will be doing for National Home Security Month

We will be supporting the campaign again as we did last year with various activities as follows:

  • Themed blog posts
Each week we will post our own take on the theme for that week
  • Charity support – focus on restorative justice
This year our chosen charity will be Remedi UK. We recently posted a blog about restorative justice and how it can help the victims of burglary (and even the perpetrators). Remedi UK is one of the country’s leading providers of restorative justice and is based in Yorkshire. We will be donating 40p for every key that we cut throughout October to the charity and we’ll also have a collection in the shop that customers can contribute to
  • In the media
We’ll be talking to the media and sharing tips and advice through our own social media channels all month to make sure that people are aware of the risks of burglary and how to prevent them
  • How does a burglary make you feel?
We’ll also be asking the question, how does a burglary make you feel? One of the worst things about a break in is the emotional impact and one of the benefits of restorative justice is being able to express the impact that a burglary has had on you and your family. We’re therefore asking people to let us know how they felt after a burglary in the hope that it helps them and acts as a warning to others to take home security seriously

What you can do

Campaigns like this are only successful if the word gets out so it would be great if you could share and comment and interact as much as possible. The more people who take home security seriously, the fewer homes that get burgled.

If you need any keys cutting why not get them done in October so that benefits our chosen charity (at no cost to you). Keep checking in with the site, our Facebook page and our Twitter to see what’s going on.
